The history of KAISA traces its roots to the time when Mount Pinatubo erupted in June 12, 1991. The Ateneo College Covered Courts was then opened as an evacuation center for the 448 evacuees from San Marcelino, Zambales and Porac, Pampanga. The evacuees were given 24-hour services with regards to their basic needs such as medicines, clothing, meals psychological assistance, liturgical services, etc., by the Ateneo Community and the neigbhoring communities as well. This community effort was then called Task Force: Pinatubo.

After the closure of the evacuation center, the Task Force envisioned a permanent organization which would ensure not only the continuity of its rehabilitation projects for calamity victims, but one which would also be able to respond to future need of community service. Thus, on January 11, 1992, Task Force: Pinatubo formally became KAISA.
